CONTEMPORARY gospel songbird Kudzai Gonese Phiri and her outfit, The New Wind, are set to re-launch their second album I Am Kingdom during a live recording which they hope will help them spread their wings.

The album — which is a fine blend of jazz and blues — will be re-launched tonight at the River of Life Church in Eastlea, Harare.

First released in November last year, the 14-track album was launched in December at the Dutch Reformed Hall in Harare central business district.

“I feel that we didn’t do justice to the message in the album and also delivering it on a platform that it is appreciated. This time it’s about the experience while we also do a live DVD recording,” the 28-year-old Phiri said.

The songwriter and vocal coach said she felt the call to the music ministry in early infancy and had nurtured her gift over the years.

Married to Keith Phiri, she recorded her first album titled Call It Into Time back in 2013, a 12-track project which carried hit songs such as Glory, Praise Medley and Heaven Hears.

“This Friday people can expect a night that is not solely centred on the album though that’s the music we are bringing, but we want to zero in on the message,” she said. “I have noticed that when you write songs most people don’t fully understand the message and then you find that only the writer understands the revelation behind a particular song.”

Tonight, Phiri will share the stage with other budding gospel artistes in the form of Petronellah Sengwayo, Chido Matambira, Ruthless and So Profound.

Having passed through tutors such as Richard Kohola, Bernie Bismack and briefly Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Phiri fell in love with gospel music, jazz and blues and her unique music feel has always been a fusion of those genres.

The former Girls High student, who holds a Grade 6 Music Theory certificate from the London-based Associated Board Royal Schools of Music, said she stumbled on the genre she sings.
